EXHAUSTED TO EMPOWERED:
A PARENT'S INTRODUCTION TO FBT

MASTER KEY FAMILY-BASED METHODS TO HELPING YOUR TEEN OVERCOME ANOREXIA AND THE GRASP IT HAS ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

CONNECT WITH YOUR TEEN, EMPOWER YOURSELF, AND GUIDE YOUR TEEN AND FAMILY TO FLOURISH AGAIN.

Please Remember:
Teens with anorexia need psychotherapy, medical oversight (ideally by a medical doctor who specializes in treating teens with eating disorders), and often a nutritionist and/or psychiatrist. This guide is intended to augment this treatment, not substitute it. Combining all avenues of support can help you find your way back to knowing yourself and your teen, and bring the light back to both of your eyes.

This Course In a Nutshell

Most parents have a dominant wish for their kids: to flourish.

If you are reading this, I imagine you are concerned your child/teen may be dieting and losing weight and may have an eating disorder or be in the midst of developing one.

You don’t know: How to help your kid, whether there is something you even can do to help them, and if there is, what that something is.

You want to sift through all the information and guidance out there, but there's a lot and time is limited and you don't know what to trust.

Rather than spending all of your time and money pursuing something without much information upfront about it, we wanted to give you a crash course on the gold standard family treatment for teens that are struggling with eating and dieting - called FBT or Maudsley - so that you can make an educated decision about whether this approach resonates with you.

Ultimately, we want to help you return to feeling empowered and confident so you can do what you do best:
help your child/teen return to flourishing.

I Imagine You Are Exhausted.

You’re probably on the opposite side of the screen right now feeling tired. Exhausted is more like it. And maybe even defeated. Perhaps you just finished up a book that’s titled something like “How to Get Your Teen to Eat Again,” and the moment you laid it down on the nightstand table, you thought, “This is so hard.” It is. It’s one of the most challenging situations teens and their families can face. It often feels overwhelming, and everyone feels depleted…often. And parents? Well, eating disorders can shake parents’ confidence so they’re left feeling lost, fearful, and disempowered.

Yet here’s the thing:
Parents often have an inextricable link to their children that can move mountains - and save lives.

And it's possible to get out of what you (and your teen) are feeling right now. But you're not going to get there by focusing only on what and how much they eat.

Anorexia is a big, complicated illness. And to get over the hump of the here and now so you can reach a better future, you need the knowledge that will help you focus on the things that have a bigger impact.

The role parents can play in helping their teen, the value of building on their connection with their teen, and a supportive experience to learning so that parents feel more knowledgeable, confident, and grounded to take their next steps. That’s what this crash course is all about.

The messages we give our kids, The mindset we operate by, The interactions within the world around us The genetics that make up who we are… It’s all a part of this massive jigsaw puzzle. And while I can’t promise to fix or solve or cure anything, I can promise you this: This course might just be one big piece that can help you put together your very unique jigsaw puzzle.

The Messages Our World Gives Us

I know it might sound obvious, the fact that there are messages all over the place that build up into our mentalities and sort of derail us from actually being who we’re supposed to be.
Photoshop isn’t a new concept and magazine covers have yet to show unedited versions of beauty on their covers.
And yes, cosmetic industries are booming and a size 4 jeans in one brand is the same as a size 12 in another.

But those aren’t the only messages I’m talking about.

I’m also talking about the ones you and I grew up with. The ones that are still fed to us not just by society but also by our schools, peers, neighbors, role models, and sometimes even our own friends and family:

Stand out and shine! Be the best of the best of the best in whatever you do! The more you achieve, the more you’re worth!

I’ve seen what this mindset does to people. It tears them apart. Especially in the years when brains are still forming, identity is still fashioning itself into existence, and fitting in (and being better than) is everything, teens can fall into the pursuit of being the best, the prettiest, or the thinnest.

And along the way, they can develop a habit of punishing themselves - unknowingly.

It’s not their fault.

And whatever you think might be your responsibility in this journey… probably isn’t what you think it is at all.

I’d love for you to learn which messages are hurting your

teen now, and which ones you can use to help you and your teen move through this.

Happier. Healthier. And way more alive.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

 -Howard Thurman

Remembering What You Already Know

I’m willing to bet if I put you in a room full of teenagers, including yours, with your eyes closed, you’d still know exactly which teen is yours. You’d be able to pick out their breathing. You could sense the kind of shift in their chair that makes sense to only you. And, whenever each of them makes that huffing sound that tells you they heard what was said but they’re not going to respond?

Well, you’d be able to pick out your teen’s huff in a heartbeat.

You know your kid. Even if it’s been a while since you felt like it, you know them.

Reimagine a Better Cycle

I have seen it so many times. The frustration, the confusion, the feeling of defeat, and the downright exhaustion of it all. You do your best to help your teen, and right when you think it might be clicking, you see them fall back into the same habits you’re trying to help them break. You’re on a never-ending hamster wheel, and all you want is to step off of it to see your child, happy again. Now is the time to learn about the cycle you and your teen are on … and figure out how to run it onto a new path. You already know you have a connection to your teen no one else will ever have. Now, it’s a matter of shifting directions so that you can teach and model the mindset of being healthier.

Reinforcement For Life
I’ve said it a thousand times before and I will continue to forever say it: Anorexia is a very complicated illness. There is no quick fix to it, and if I were to dump everything that could possibly help in a single course, it would be information overload.  That’s why I like to say that this course is a reinforcement.

Point blank: a teen with anorexia needs to work with a therapist, and this often involves the parents and family.

But this? This is for the parents.

For before the therapist's office, when you’re looking into what treatment feels like a good fit for your teen and family.

For the hospital visit, when your teen is about to be discharged and you want a lot of information - fast.

This is for during the therapist’s appointment, so you can further understand the things you might be talking about on a deeper level.

And this is for after you leave the therapist. For when life and reality come back at you full force…and you’d like a little (a lot) of reminders to help you move forward toward a better beginning.

CONNECT WITH WHAT MATTERS MOST.

Connect with your teen, empower yourself, and learn the major details about the family treatment used to help your teen and family to come alive again.

I’ve broken everything down to give you as much information in as little time as possible. So you can focus on the pieces you want, when you need to, refer to what you might need a refresher on, and remember what you may have forgotten.

What you will receive:

7 Hours of Video and Audio Modules: Broken down into digestible chunks and paced over 5 weeks.  As soon as you make your purchase, you will receive access to all of the modules.  However, they are broken up over 5 weeks.  This is to help pace you through the material, and so that you can think through what you're learning.  Participants can continue to access the material over 2 months from the time they sign-up for the series.

Written Activities: To help parents reflect on and integrate the information

Tools, tips, and information: To help parents on their healthier journey

Grow Together as Parents: Review or share modules with a partner so that both or all parents learn and grow together

Bonus! For a limited time, we are including access to additional educational lectures that include question and answer sessions with parents.

Optional: Mindfulness Activities and Learning Support to Guide You Through the Material: Because we know how hard it is to synthesize all the material on your own and how challenging this journey is. If you upgrade to receive voxer support for 4 consecutive Mondays, you will get the chance to ask Dr. Stewart questions on the material that you've learned before moving on to the next modules. (Please note: this is provided to help explain concepts. It is not therapy nor a substitute for therapy. Think of it like the chance to ask a professor questions during a talk on FBT.)

Hello! I'm Dr. Stewart.

I'm a Clinical Psychologist, Speaker, International Consultant and Coach, and Adjunct Instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where I teach research-backed treatments for teens with eating disorders. I have worked with hundreds of families trying to help their teens through eating disorders and I love to teach, give public talks, and work with individuals, parents, families, and groups to help them work through challenges and return to flourishing. I created this digital guide because I saw so many parents that needed extra help. Not as a means of replacing therapy (we always recommend therapy to help people with eating disorders), but to supplement it and introduce parents to family approaches to helping teens with anorexia. Since you are here, I'm guessing your teen is struggling or you know someone that is. My heart goes out to them, you, and the whole family. I hope you will join us to master research-based methods of helping your teen and start your journey toward a more connected and happier family.

This is the experience you don’t get in books and blogs and gurus. It’s not a self-help guide with strategies that will make you second guess if you’re doing it “right.” It’s an actual walk-through to help you understand eating disorders and family approaches used to treat them, remember who your child is, and support you in your learning journey.

Truth be told, most of my conversations with families have started with this information. Knowing there are more families who want and need this material, I wanted to make it more accessible.

This is the start. The beginning. The next step to a happier, healthier teen.

Ruth J.

"Some of the greatest value I got from this series was an understanding of the emotional side of the illness, how it impacts the whole family system, the value of pausing and reflecting on the emotions coming up, and how to deal with the situation with compassion and self-compassion. I also enjoyed thinking about individual values and the values for the family. And stressing that being medically well is first, but with the aim of being a "whole" person, who enjoys a meaningful life."

My Hope is that You WILL Get Through This
So that you see yourselves through to the other side of anorexia. Where you’ll look at your teen and think:

“That’s the kid I remember… but even happier.”

Where they find an identity that brings life to their eyes. And you’ll feel like yourself again, too.

That is, if you’re willing to do the work. Both this course series AND therapy. Both with your child AND without.

You’re in the position to be an incredible role model as you navigate through all of this.

It’s just going to require pulling every morsel of strength from within yourself. And that strength is within you. Even when you feel imperfect and flawed, it’s there.

If you’re willing to take-on that role and feel empowered to do it, then I’d love for you to click the button below and get the course that will help you on your way.
